April Clay was born and raised in Suffern, New York. She always felt encouraged as an artist, as she was born into a family of actors, artists and dancers. April attended Pratt institute in Brooklyn, Ny. where she studied fine arts and illustration. She transferred to The School of Visual Arts and went on to study childrens book illustration. Her studies continued at Rockland Community College in computer graphics and graphic design.
After School, April found herself heading the art department of a New York party
decorator. Here, she painted large backdrops and made intricate 3 dimensional
centerpieces for Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. April went on to establish her own business,
Dragonfly Productions, where she made artwork for several event planning businesses.
April’s successful run at the commercial end of the art spectrum made way into the field
of decorative painting. With decorative painting, April created murals and imaginative
finishes for clients homes. Although this gave April more freedom, not to mention new
techniques, it still focused more on customers than creation.
In 2004, April decided she wanted her own voice. Although she was able to consign
a few pieces to local galleries and shops during her more commercial period, her recent
surge into the fine arts field has created a welcome opportunity to focus on what she loves.
April feels the unique juxtaposition of her various experiences has created a style that, though it surely reflects her influences, is all her own.
April currently lives with her partner, Glen and 3 cats, just outside of Boston in Arlington, Ma.
